Getting Started with Hytale: A New Player's Guide

New to Hytale? Here's everything you need to know before you jump into Orbis, from choosing your character to surviving your first night.

So you’re interested in Hytale. Maybe you saw a trailer. Maybe a friend won’t stop talking about it. Maybe you’re just looking for your next game and this one looks interesting.

Whatever brought you here, welcome. Hytale is going to be a big, complex game with a lot to unpack. This guide will get you up to speed on what to expect, what decisions you’ll be making early on, and how to hit the ground running when the game finally releases.

Let’s dive in.

First: What Actually Is Hytale?

It’s a fair question. The marketing has been… sparse. Here’s the straightforward answer:

Hytale is a sandbox adventure RPG set in the voxel-based world of Orbis. It combines:

  • Exploration — Procedurally generated worlds with distinct regions and biomes
  • Combat — Deep, tactical fighting with multiple weapon types
  • Building — Extensive construction tools with more block varieties than you can count
  • Creation — Robust modding tools that let players make custom content
  • Multiplayer — Both cooperative and competitive play, plus mini games

It’s being made by Hypixel Studios—the same team that built the massive Hypixel Minecraft server. So yes, they know multiplayer. They know what players want. They’ve done this before.

Before You Play: Character Creation

One of the first things you’ll do is create your Avatar. This isn’t just cosmetic—how you look is how other players will recognize you, and your choices matter.

The Basics

From the official character customization blog, we know you can customize:

  • Skintone — Full spectrum available
  • Eye color — Multiple options
  • Hairstyle — Short, long, and everything in between
  • Facial hair — If that’s your look
  • Clothing — Multiple layers with color customization

The Strategy

Here’s the thing: your appearance doesn’t affect your stats. This isn’t an RPG where you’re min-maxing your character creation. So make someone you like looking at.

That said:

  • Consider the environment — If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the Boreal Frontier, maybe don’t wear white
  • Think about visibility — Bright colors make you easier to spot in PvP
  • Express yourself — You’ll be looking at this character for a long time

Understanding the Modes

Hytale isn’t just one thing. It’s multiple experiences in one package.

Adventure Mode

This is the core RPG experience. You’re an Avatar who has arrived on Orbis under mysterious circumstances. You’ll explore regions, fight creatures, uncover the story of Varyn and the fall of civilizations, and progressively become more powerful.

Creative Mode

For the builders. This is where you get access to:

  • Unlimited resources (probably)
  • Advanced tools — Block selection, copy/paste, undo/redo
  • World configuration — Set parameters for your custom worlds
  • Flying — Confirmed as being implemented for playtesting

Mini Games

Quick multiplayer modes for when you want something faster than adventure mode. We’re still waiting on details about which games will be included, but given Hypixel’s history, expect competitive PvP and cooperative challenges.

Your First Day: What to Expect

We don’t have the full game yet, but based on what we know, here’s how that first playthrough will probably go:

Waking Up in Orbis

You start in the Central Grasslands. This is the “starter area”—temperate, resource-rich, but not completely safe. You’ll spawn, you’ll look around, and you’ll see:

  • Open prairies with sparse forests
  • Rocky outcrops breaking up the terrain
  • Resources everywhere — This is intentional

The First Priority: Tools

You’re going to need tools. The Spring 2025 update confirms “core movement, block placement, combat, and crafting” are all in the game. Your first tasks will probably be:

  1. Gather basic materials — Punch some trees, grab some stone
  2. Craft basic tools — Pickaxe, sword, maybe a shield
  3. Find or build shelter — Night is coming, and Orbis gets dangerous at night

The First Threat: Trorks

You’ll encounter Trorks quickly. They’re the aggressive mushroom creatures that make the Central Grasslands their home. Here’s what you need to know:

  • They hunt in groups — One Trork is manageable. Three is a problem.
  • They’re not mindless — They have tactics, they call for help, they flee when wounded
  • They’re the apex predator here — Respect that, or you’ll die repeatedly

Your first combat encounters will be learning experiences. You’ll figure out weapon timing, dodge patterns, and when to stand your ground versus when to run.

Early Game Progression

Once you’ve survived the first day, what’s next?

Gathering and Crafting

The Spring update mentions “adventure gameplay centered around fundamental lifeskills like cooking and smithing.” This tells us:

  • Cooking matters — Food isn’t just healing; it’s a core system
  • Smithing matters — You can upgrade and improve gear
  • Skills unlock over time — This is a progression system

Exploration Beyond the Grasslands

The Central Grasslands are safe(ish). But other regions await:

  • Boreal Frontier — Frozen north with Yetis and ice caves
  • Earthglade — Deep forests with Trork-Kweebec conflicts
  • Wild Savannah — Mixed biomes converging in interesting ways

Each region has unique resources, unique creatures, and unique challenges. Progression isn’t just about numbers—it’s about access.

POIs and Encounters

The Spring update promises “revamped and expanded approach to POIs and encounters.” These are:

  • Points of Interest — Dungeons, ruins, structures worth exploring
  • Encounters — Scripted or semi-scripted events that happen as you explore

Clearing a dungeon might reward you with rare materials. Resolving an encounter might unlock a new quest line. Exploration pays off.

Combat: The Basics

Combat in Hytale isn’t click-and-pray. Here are the fundamentals:

Endurance Is Everything

Every action costs endurance. Attacking, blocking, dodging—it all uses the same resource. Manage it poorly and you’ll be exhausted when it matters most.

Weapon Choice Matters

Different weapons have different playstyles:

  • Sword — Defensive, fast, good with a shield
  • Mace — Slow, hard-hitting, high endurance cost
  • Daggers — Very fast, no blocking, hit-and-run
  • Battle axe — Damage increases the longer you press the attack

You’ll find what works for you. There’s no “best” weapon.

Positioning Is Key

Where you stand matters. The official combat docs are clear on this: “Positioning is a determining factor, especially in PvP.” Get cornered, and you’re dead. Keep your escape routes open, and you live.

Multiplayer: To Play With Others or Not?

Hytale can be played solo. But it’s also designed with multiplayer in mind.

Cooperative Play

Adventure mode with friends is going to be great:

  • Shared progression — Probably
  • Role specialization — One person tanks, one heals, one deals damage
  • Building together — Construction projects go faster with multiple people

Competitive Play

Mini games, PvP arenas, server-based competitions. If you want to test your skills against other players, you’ll have options.

Server Communities

Join a server, meet people, become part of a community. The Hypixel Minecraft server thrived on this. Hytale will too.

What We’re Still Waiting On

This guide is based on confirmed information, but there’s a lot we don’t know yet:

  • Full crafting system — What can we make? How complex is it?
  • Skill trees — How do we progress? What are the milestones?
  • Economy — Is there trading? Currency? Shops?
  • Housing — Can we build permanent bases? Claim land?
  • Mounts — Can we ride creatures?
  • Pets — Can we tame and keep companions?

These are the questions that will get answered as we get closer to release.

Tips for New Players

Speculative but practical advice:

Don’t Rush

Orbis is worth exploring. Take your time. Read the environment. The game rewards curiosity.

Experiment

Try different weapons. Different playstyles. You might surprise yourself with what you enjoy.

Die Sometimes

You’re going to die. That’s part of the game. Learn from it. What killed you? Could you have done something differently? Next time, you’ll be ready.

Engage With the Community

The Hytale community is already massive. Forums, Discord servers, content creators. There’s a lot of collective knowledge out there, and people are generally willing to help.

The Bottom Line

Hytale is going to be a big game with a lot of systems. Don’t feel like you need to understand everything before you start. The Central Grasslands are designed for new players—you’ll learn as you go.

The most important thing is to enjoy the journey. Orbis is a beautiful, dangerous, fascinating world. Take your time with it. Make a character you like. Pick a weapon that feels right. Explore at your own pace.

We’ll see you in the grasslands.
